At Talking Minds, we offer personalised, one-to-one academic support for students in higher education who receive Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA). We are looking for experienced and passionate professionals to join our team as Specialist Study Skills Tutors for students with Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD), such as dyslexia.
About the Role
As a Specialist SpLD Study Skills Tutor, you will:
- Deliver tailored 1:1 support to students with SpLDs
- Help students build effective study skills and strategies in areas such as:
- Reading and processing academic material
- Essay planning and writing
- Organisation, time management, and memory techniques
- Structuring assignments and proofreading strategies
- Support students in understanding their learning profile and developing independent learning strategies
- Set clear, achievable goals and review progress regularly
What We’re Looking For
We’re seeking knowledgeable, student-focused professionals with a strong understanding of how SpLDs affect learning in higher education. You should have experience helping students overcome academic challenges while recognising and building on their strengths. Familiarity with assistive technology is also desirable. The ability to work independently, maintain accurate records, and communicate clearly is essential.
Essential Requirements
- Ability to do some face-to-face support in your area
- Undergraduate degree
- Teaching qualification such as a PGCE
- Level 5 accredited qualification or postgraduate qualification in SpLDs
- Professional memberships with (at least) one of the following:
- PATOSS (full or associate membership)
- BDA (full professional membership)
- ADSHE (professional membership)
- Dyslexia Guild (member, associate or fellow membership)
- A recognised teaching qualification or SpLD specialist qualification, as outlined in the DfE’s Mandatory Qualifications and Professional Body Membership matrix
- Professional body membership (e.g. British Dyslexia Association, PATOSS, or Dyslexia Guild)
