At Talking Minds, we deliver person-centred, one-to-one mentoring for students in higher education who receive Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA). We’re seeking experienced professionals with a strong understanding of mental health to provide tailored support that empowers students to manage their academic life confidently and independently.
About the Role
As a Specialist Mental Health Mentor, you will:
- Provide structured, 1:1 support to students managing mental health challenges
- Support students to:
- Understand academic expectations and demands of higher education
- Identify barriers caused by their mental health condition
- Develop time management, organisation, and workload planning strategies
- Set realistic goals and create structured plans to meet deadlines
- Build confidence and independence through ongoing support
- Monitor signs of disengagement or emotional distress, and refer to appropriate services when needed
- Maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality, and accurate record-keeping
- Work empathetically, calmly, and responsively with students in distress
What We’re Looking For
We’re seeking empathetic and reliable professionals with a deep understanding of mental health conditions and how these can affect a student’s ability to engage with higher education. You should be confident supporting students with a range of conditions such as anxiety, depression, personality disorders, bipolar disorder, OCD, and complex co-occurring needs. Strong listening, observational, and communication skills are essential, alongside the ability to maintain clear boundaries and make referrals where needed.
Essential Requirements
- Ability to do some face-to-face support at HEI’s near your area
- Undergraduate degree in relevant subject
- Professional membership with a recognised body, as outlined in the DfE’s Mandatory Qualifications and Professional Body Membership matrix (e.g. British Psychological Society, General Medical Council or HCPC)
