About the Role

As a Specialist Mentor, you will:

  • Offer structured 1:1 mentoring to students with autism, ADHD, or related neurodiverse profiles
  • Support students in building strategies for managing:
    • Anxiety, stress, and emotional regulation
    • Time management and organisation
    • Prioritisation and setting goals
    • Motivation, focus, and prioritising tasks
    • Transitions in and out of university life
  • Encourage self-awareness, resilience, and independence
  • Maintain professional boundaries
  • Tailor each session to the student's unique needs and goals

What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking empathetic and experienced professionals who understand the needs of students with autism and ADHD. You should be confident working independently, take a person-centred and practical approach to mentoring, and have a strong grasp of the challenges neurodiverse students face in higher education. The ability to maintain accurate session records and communicate effectively is essential.

Essential Requirements

  • Ability to do some face-to-face support at HEI’s near your area
  • Undergraduate degree
  • Six National Autistic Society (NAS) online training modules, including Autism and SPELL in Higher Education module
  • Or postgraduate qualification in Autism or Special Educational Needs and Disability

At Talking Minds, we deliver person-centred, one-to-one mentoring for students in higher education who receive Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA). We’re seeking experienced professionals with a strong understanding of mental health to provide tailored support that empowers students to manage their academic life confidently and independently.

About the Role

As a Specialist Mental Health Mentor, you will:

  • Provide structured, 1:1 support to students managing mental health challenges
  • Support students to:
    • Understand academic expectations and demands of higher education
    • Identify barriers caused by their mental health condition
    • Develop time management, organisation, and workload planning strategies
    • Set realistic goals and create structured plans to meet deadlines
    • Build confidence and independence through ongoing support
  • Monitor signs of disengagement or emotional distress, and refer to appropriate services when needed
  • Maintain professional boundaries, confidentiality, and accurate record-keeping
  • Work empathetically, calmly, and responsively with students in distress

What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking empathetic and reliable professionals with a deep understanding of mental health conditions and how these can affect a student’s ability to engage with higher education. You should be confident supporting students with a range of conditions such as anxiety, depression, personality disorders, bipolar disorder, OCD, and complex co-occurring needs. Strong listening, observational, and communication skills are essential, alongside the ability to maintain clear boundaries and make referrals where needed.

At Talking Minds, we offer personalised, one-to-one academic support for students in higher education who receive Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA). We are looking for experienced and passionate professionals to join our team as Specialist Study Skills Tutors for students with Specific Learning Difficulties (SpLD), such as dyslexia.

About the Role

As a Specialist SpLD Study Skills Tutor, you will:

  • Deliver tailored 1:1 support to students with SpLDs
  • Help students build effective study skills and strategies in areas such as:
    • Reading and processing academic material
    • Essay planning and writing
    • Organisation, time management, and memory techniques
    • Structuring assignments and proofreading strategies
  • Support students in understanding their learning profile and developing independent learning strategies
  • Set clear, achievable goals and review progress regularly

What We’re Looking For

We’re seeking knowledgeable, student-focused professionals with a strong understanding of how SpLDs affect learning in higher education. You should have experience helping students overcome academic challenges while recognising and building on their strengths. Familiarity with assistive technology is also desirable. The ability to work independently, maintain accurate records, and communicate clearly is essential.

Essential Requirements

  • Ability to do some face-to-face support in your area
  • Undergraduate degree
  • Teaching qualification such as a PGCE
  • Level 5 accredited qualification or postgraduate qualification in SpLDs
  • Professional memberships with (at least) one of the following:
    • PATOSS (full or associate membership)
    • BDA (full professional membership)
    • ADSHE (professional membership)
    • Dyslexia Guild (member, associate or fellow membership)
  • A recognised teaching qualification or SpLD specialist qualification, as outlined in the DfE’s Mandatory Qualifications and Professional Body Membership matrix
  • Professional body membership (e.g. British Dyslexia Association, PATOSS, or Dyslexia Guild)
